MVLL's Umpire Mentoring Program is a best-in-class opportunity for youths, league-age 12 and up, to develop leadership and communication skills and have fun learning about the sport from the perspective of the third team on the field - the umpires!
We treat this like a real job - umpires are expected to present themselves in a professional manner, schedule and arrive for their shifts on time, and make calls to the best of their ability, all within a learning environment designed to be supportive and empowering.
We provide plenty of ongoing training, and, of course, stylish shirts and hats that will be the envy of your peers. The Umpdate, a weekly newsletter, keeps umpires up to date on important umpiring news during the season. Umpires receive a stipend to cover their costs to participate in the program.
There are signup and training opportunities during Fall Ball (September through October) and during the Spring Season (March through June). More experienced and capable umpires will get further opportunities to umpire playoff, championship, and even District 3 All Star tournament games.
Umpires must be age 12 by August 31, 2026 to participate. Training sessions for the upcoming Fall Ball 2025 season are scheduled for Saturday, August 17th, 2025 and/or Sunday September 6th 2025 - both at 9:30 AM - 12:00 PM, both at the Boyle Majors diamond. New umpires (those who have never worked a Spring season) must attend at least one session. Returning umpires are highly encouraged to attend one or both.

Ready to say "Play Ball!"? Email program directors Claire Bindeman (recruiting, coaching, scheduling, and all things organizational) and Steven Younger (training, coaching, and MVLL Umpire In Chief) at [email protected] to learn more. You (or your parent on your behalf if you are under 18) must complete the Fall Ball Umpire Interest Form 2025 and Waivers for Fall Ball 2025. An email (the "UMPdate") will be sent to those who fill out the interest form to answer logistical questions such as how do I sign up for times, how much do I get paid, when do I get paid, etc.
