MINORS CITY CHAMPIONSHIP

Mets 6, Monarchs 4 (7 innings) — On Tuesday at Boyle Buena Vista, the Mets seized the game with a two-run seventh inning fueled by clutch hits from Ty Wallace and Austen Katz, then turned to closer Oscar Karlen to bring home the championship.

As the last game played on Tuesday, the Mets-Monarchs game throbbed with fans circling the Thalia diamond in the June gloaming, and the two teams did not disappoint — particularly when Rory Murphy of the Monarchs delivered the game-tying single to center field with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, plating Maxwell Lee to force extras.

The Mets recovered from an early blow, as Sam Marcus of the Monarchs smoked a two-run home run over the left field fence to build a 3-0 lead.

But Mose Merrick’s RBI ground out in the second inning made it 3-1, and set the stage for a big three-run rally by the Mets in the fourth, built on hits by Leo Tenenbown, Karlen, Wallace and the tie-breaking RBI by Gavin Bailey to score Wallace. Karlen stole home to tie the game at 3-3.

The Mets received two innings from Kadin Mokari, two shutout innings from Tenenbown and three final innings from Karlen.

Wallace and Bailey each had two hits for the winners. Bailey had two key RBIs.

For the Monarchs, Frankie Foster hurled three strong innings of one-run ball, and Murphy retired nine of the final 10 hitters he faced, striking out six.

Giants 11, Cardinals 7 — Remi Thill had three hits, including an inside-the-park home run and a double, and drove in four to lead the Giants to the La Ginestra Cup final on Wednesday.

James Wolston hit a bases-loaded triple, and closed out the game on the mound for the Giants.

A’s 6, Phillies 2 — Quinn Kelly hurled three innings and Gray Getty had two doubles and three RBIs to lead the A’s to the La Ginestra Cup final on Wednesday.

For the Phillies, Jack Chaudhry struck out six in three innings on the mound.

Mets 3, Cardinals 2 — Gavin Bailey singled to drive in the tying run in the bottom of the fifth, then made a dash home after a steal of third to score the eventual winning run as the 2-seed Mets won a thriller.

Bailey’s single drove in Kadin Mokari, who opened the fifth with a double. Mokari shined on the mound for the Mets, hurling three shutout innings and striking out five. Oscar Karlen closed the game for the Mets by striking out the side, to seal the Mets’ berth in Tuesday’s City Championship.
