District 3 Champions-10U!

From the Marin IJ:

In the first game of the day, Mill Valley starting pitcher Nickolas Welter threw a perfect game with 11 strikeouts to lead his team to a 10-0 four-inning win over Twin Cities. Sunday was also Welter’s 10th birthday.

“He was just on,” said Mill Valley manager Peter Cann. “He has been just great the whole season. He’s had great outings but this was his first opportunity really to shine and he seized and just ran with it. You could just tell he was just locked in.”

Mill Valley was also locked in offensively. It scored two runs in the first, three in the third and then added five in the fourth. James Bryan had the big hit in the fourth, a smashed two-run double that put Mill Valley firmly in the driver’s seat. Griffin Newby also had two hits and drove in a pair of runs for Mill Valley.

Earlier in All-Star play, Twin Cities had narrowly edged Mill Valley 10-9. But Cann said his team turned a corner after that loss. They were riding a three-game winning streak heading into Sunday’s Championship game.

“That kind of set the stage for our run where the kids started to believe in themselves and were developing some resilience,” he said. “Then things started clicking. We were taking two steps forward and one step back but you could feel the chemistry starting to come together and the pieces starting to fall into place and everything really starting to really come along.”

Mill Valley will open play in the Section 1 Tournament in Woodland with a play-in game on Saturday.
