La Ginestra Minors Champion Crowned!
The Minors Pirates captured the LaGinestra Cup on Wednesday, winning the final MVLL game of the season 10-2 over the Minors Giants at balmy Boyle Thalia. Both teams came out swinging, with the Giants jumping ahead 1-0 in the first inning when Adam Mortimer knocked-in Oliver Chucher on a line drive single. The Pirates answered in the bottom of the first when Niki Welter hit the first pitch of his AB over the CF fence for a 2-run homer. Logan Grant then tied the game at 2-2 on a steal of home in the 2nd inning.
The Pirates bats went to work in the bottom of the 2nd inning, scoring four runs in a flurry of hits and fielder’s choices to take the lead at 6-2. The Bucs added another run in the bottom of the 3rd taking a 7-2 lead into the 4th inning when Welter took the mound. Over three innings, Welter struck out nine Giants batters while surrendering a single hit and no walks, finishing the job commendably started by the pitching platoon of Nate Lee, Tenzin Mak and Liam Winn who each threw one inning. The Pirates added three more runs in the 5th inning to finish the scoring.
Logan Grant and Roberto Santo Domingo each pitched for the Giants, giving up 14 hits with 6 strikeouts and only one walk. The Pirates pitchers collectively gave up 2 hits and 2 walks while striking out 12 batters.
At the plate, several Pirates had multi-hit games: Winn (3-for-3 including a double), Nolan Hansel (3-for-3 including two doubles and an RBI), William Palmer (3-for-3 including a double and 2 RBIs) and Declan Lam (2-for-3 including a triple and 4 RBIs). Nate Lee and Ciaran McDonnell also hit the ball hard, with Lee notching an RBI single and McDonnell smoking a double down the LF line. Welter’s 1st inning blast also yielded 2 RBIs, and Tenzin Mak drove in a run. Defensive highlights including running, sliding grabs in the outfield by McDonnell and Sidney Hakanson, and Cedra Crews hustling at 3B. A great game to end a wonderful season!!
